The cold intake system is a modern and very popular type of engine tuning, which is able to reduce the degree of heating of the air entering the engine, thereby increasing the efficiency of filling the cylinders with it. That is, in order for the best return to occur when pressing the accelerator pedal, the air with which the engine operates must be as cold as possible. This is
the function that the air intake system is designed to perform.
The concept of a cold intake system and its scheme of action
In any tuning of the engine and just its maintenance, the fuel-air mixture is one of the main components on which the power characteristics depend. However, regular air filters are equipped with a filter element made of an incredibly dense material, and its design can not provide a sufficient number of streams of this mixture directed to the cylinders. So the cold air intake system is a filter with zero resistance (the so-called “zero”), which has microscopic holes that allow you to run a much larger volume.
In General, the intake system is being refined in two ways: increasing the volume of incoming air and reducing the air resistance at the intake. In order to achieve these characteristics, the following components are subjected to modification: the pipe, intake manifold, air filter and receiver. The effect of increasing the car’s power (horsepower) depends on how much the standard filter hindered the engine, since it is the standard filter that is the biggest restriction in the supply of air to the internal combustion engine.
AEM cold air intake system
AEM cold air intake it’s one of top cold air intakes which you can find. The zero-resistance filter is a carbon or aluminum cone (depending on the manufacturer). It is tightly mounted on the filter component and screens the warm air coming from the internal combustion engine. Of course, the design provides not zero, but very reduced resistance to air flow. Both the cone shape chosen for the filter and the configuration of the filter component itself create auxiliary swirls during operation, which contribute to more efficient filling of the engine cylinders.
Every driver knows how strong the oncoming air pressure is-just stick your hand out the window. The colder and denser the stream, the better the fuel with which it interacts burns. This force is used by the cold intake system to increase engine power and save fuel consumption by the vehicle.
Advantages of the system
So, one way to add a few horsepower to a car is to install zero-drag filters. But like any system, the cold air intake system has its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of the cold intake system:
- increase engine power and torque;
- smooth start-up of the turbocharger;
- increases the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal;
- significant reduction in fuel consumption;
- reduces the probability of getting a detonation;
- the engine runs smoothly and smoothly.
The filter element “zero” is available in two types:
- cotton non-woven material, laid with corrugation and reinforced with a metal mesh, is used on cars moving on asphalt surfaces;
- small-cell polyurethane (otherwise – foam air filters), in which the mesh resists less suction, and the element itself is much better at detaining dust and has a large cleaning surface (this type is more often used on cars for racing on off-road tracks, for example, the pro sport cold intake system with a more aggressive air supply to the engine).
As a rule, this element is located outside the hood of the car, in an area with colder air, for example, under the wing, instead of the headlights, in the bumper or behind the grille. The filter will be connected to the engine by a pipe. This is more appropriate, since the engine does not take hot air, which significantly reduces its functionality, but cold dense air directly from the atmosphere.
